Working on Long Distance Projects during COVID-19

Whilst some projects have been put on hold in these unusual circumstances, others have continued to progress. Across the board, our studios have had to re-evaluate our work processes to continue to deliver on our clients’ projects whilst maintaining social distancing. But this is even trickier when the project is a twelve-hour drive away.

Our Brisbane studio is working on a new Medical Imaging Building at Bowen Hospital, located in north Queensland. Current travel restrictions amidst COVID-19 have meant that consultant and client meetings are being conducted via videoconferencing. Even with these technological changes, design and documentation are progressing in keeping with government funding timelines.

The current design heading into tender is a result of a thorough masterplanning exercise. According to Caitlin Masters, one of our architects, the facility has been planned to anticipate potential expansion for future facilities and services.

“The proposed renovations to the existing ward building have resulted in clear, direct flows within the existing ward and to the new building,” she said. “The design also takes advantage of the panoramic views towards McCanes Bay and Gloucester Island, and we’ve taken measures to ensure that the new building prioritises views and amenity for the re-located palliative care wing.”

Our team has enjoyed working with the Mackay Hospital & Health Service and QBuild. We look forward to visiting site (and maybe picking up a few mangoes) once travel restrictions have eased.
