Anglican Women's Hostel
In a leafy inner-west Brisbane suburb, Anglican Women’s Hostel is a purpose-built facility that caters for the needs of women needing security and support as they transition out of homelessness. The project consists of a new facility of two, eight-bed crisis support units. The building also includes a shared lounge & dining, and eight studio units providing transitional accommodation.
The facility is based on a supportive housing model that works towards long term sustainability of tenancies for homeless women and includes an Administrative Centre with client common areas. Covered ramps between adjacent structures help to enable access to the outdoors without compromising security. Moreover, breaking up the building’s mass allowed it to seamlessly sit in the streetscape.
The project was challenging as some neighbours expressed concerns over potential disruption to their neighbourhood. The building was kept to a residential scale, achieved chiefly by limiting the perceived height of development and emulating the endemic “Queenslander” vernacular.
